About Dr Anand Ragunathan

A consultant psychiatrist with more than 20 years of clinical experience within the National Health Service and the independent sector.
Dr Anand Ragunathan completed his pre-registration training in India at The Tamil Nadu Dr M.G.R. Medical University in 1997 and gained his membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in London in 2002.
He completed his higher training in general adult psychiatry and substance misuse psychiatry at the Devon, Somerset and Cornwall specialist training scheme and then worked as a Consultant Psychiatrist within the NHS from 2005 to 2012. Dr Ragunathan then moved to St Andrews Hospital in 2012, as a Consultant Psychiatrist and worked in the Men’s rehabilitation and PICU service. Following this, he moved to the National Brain Injury service, within St Andrews Hospital from 2016 to 2018, gaining experience within this field. He is currently working as a Consultant Psychiatrist at Elysium Healthcare, Potters Bar Clinic.
Dr Ragunathan is approved under section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983 and is registered with the General Medical Council as a specialist in Adult Psychiatry and Substance Misuse psychiatry. He is a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrist Adult ADHD special interest group and has recently completed a two-day course on Adult ADHD. He is a member of the UKAAN (UK Adult ADHD Network) eastern division.
All in all, Dr Ragunathan has worked in the fields of neuropsychiatry, acute rehabilitation, liaison and psychiatric intensive care. He is actively involved in case presentations, journal clubs based on evidence-based psychiatry, research and audit meetings, and provides educational supervision to psychiatric trainees and medical students from Cambridge University.

Dr Ragunathan has worked in a variety of positions within General Adult Psychiatry, including providing clinical leadership to acute in-patient units, community mental health service, outpatient clinics, psychiatric intensive care units and crisis home treatment teams.
At the National Brain Injury Centre at St Andrews Hospital, he developed expertise in assessing and managing patients with complex brain injury resulting from trauma, epilepsy and other neurological conditions. In his current role, he provides clinical leadership to an acute psychiatric ward, admitting patients with major mental disorders including psychotic illness, depression, bipolar affective disorder, major anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, drug-induced psychotic illness and personality disorder.
Recently, he has completed further training on adult ADHD and is a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists special interest group on adult ADHD.
He has gained wide experience from a number of settings, including voluntary work in a unique psychiatric setting for women in southern India. The unit cares for women with complex mental health problems including treatment-resistant psychosis and various co-morbidity issues including substance misuse, personality difficulties and traumas (physical and psychological).
In addition, Dr Ragunathan has completed many medico-legal psychiatric reports for courts since he was appointed as a consultant. In his clinical work, he prepares numerous psychiatric reports for mental health tribunals. He has also produced medical reports for child and family casework during his specialist registrar training, and completed training on litigation, courts and inquiries.
He is currently involved in medico-legal reports for court diversion, independent tribunal reports, court reports for fitness to plead, personal injury claims due to head injury, stroke, PTSD, Adult ADHD and general psychiatric illness, and psychiatric assessment for immigrants and detainees in immigration centres and prison services.
He has particular expertise in the areas of Adult ADHD, Neuropsychiatry and PTSD.
